just received an email from the conference coordinator; "It is my undivided pleasure to inform you that the Extended Abstract and Full Paper titled Synthesis of intermetallic NiAl nanoparticles by wet chemistry synthesis of NiAcac2 and AlCl3 precursors are now fit for publication at ICAM 2011 without further amendments."

Huh, x sia2 aku besengkang mata malam tadi buat correction. Padahal sabtu kelmarin sepanjang hari bekerja keras; pagi anneal sample, buat xrd. tengah hari tolong lab-mate aku india tu pndah umah. X sangka aku leh terlibat dengan kerje2 pemunggahan rakyat india di Jepun. Sangat muslim sejati aku ni. Ahaks. Pastu malamnya g program ngan budak2 malaysia sampai 11 mlm. Lama giler x jumpe bebudak tu. mmg lepak x ingat dunia la...bercerita panjang sungguh!

Esoknya Ahad g Saitama lak. Usrah dengan kaum2 hawa/ibu. Tu wajib la sbb tu je pengisian yang menjadi pergantungan rohani ni...walaupun kesannya sekejap, at least ade. Tu yang x leh miss langsung usrah ni. Balik usrah dah maghrib. Hujan lebat lak tu. kalau hujan je xpe...ni ribut taufan lagi. Kesian payung aku kelepet sane kelepet sini kene hayun ngan angin. Pulak tu boleh pulak beskal aku tergelincir. Bawak slow je, tapi jalan licin. Kejadian yang sangat memalukan bile anda jatuh secara slow motion, ia memberi kesempatan buat orang sekeliling menikmati adengan yang xleh blah tu. BENCI! BENCI!

Anyway, back to the main topic. Sampai umah terus bertungkus lumus buat correction paper tu. Boleh tahan reviewed conference kali ni. Dua2 reviewer tu selambe je komen2 idea aku. Dulu yang Hawaii punye tu, haram xde correction pape. kate reviewed conference. merepek la. Dah siap hantar correction, baru perasan. Due date adalah 4 hari yang lepas. huhuhu...tawakal je la mase tu. Tup2 tadi die email cakap accepted lak kan...Maybe aku dah stated semua satu2 correction yg aku buat. Siap argument lagi x puas ati ngan komen reviewer tu. Reason yg aku bagi maybe boleh diterima pakai kot walaupun sbnarnya x berapa pnting...hahha..asal ade je kot dorg nih?

Just got back from the lab
took off my samples from pXRD at 11.30pm
crazy right?
this is my life now
I devoted my life to my PhD

Actually xpayah pon tetengah malam g lab
tapi ni semua salah org2 dari tanah besar tu
dorang conquer XRD sepanjang hari
sampai aku terpaksa gune lepas jam 6pm
sabo je la

anyway, it wasn't burdened me at all
coz my apartment just 2 blocks away
dari pintu ke pintu just 7minutes by bicycle
Plus, i don't have to worry about the safety in Japan
so far xpernah terserempak dengan org jahat/mencurigakan
anjing kurap xde la berkeliaran memalam
hantu pon macam xde je kat sini
hehehe

anyway, sangat bebaloi okay
meredah kedinginan malam yang sunyi
sbb result aku sangat best!
yey...the result has conformed that my sample is reproducibility
i didn't obtain it by chance
nice....

Yey!
the catalyst to speed up my lab work just arrived
pXRD and FTIR
plus...some other schlenk lines
now our lab become too crowded
we have to squeeze in order to move around in our lab

pXRD was excited me the most
coz I usually scanned one sample for overnight
now, i can get the same results within an hour
yatta!!! yokatta!

What amazed me is....
on February, all the senior researches (including my sensei) were fighting with the proposal
on March, new fiscal year budget has released
and my sensei like won a lottery at that time
I remember his wide smile
talking about pXRD and new Schelnk lines in our lab
and on May, they are really here

PhD progres - problems! problems! problems!

Again..FAILED!
I could not get the results as expected

I keep thinking about my research
last night I had a great dream
that my samples have very good results
well, the results not yet released
will get it tomorrow
oh God, please make my dream come true!!!!!!!

what am I doing is synthesis nanoparticles
intermetallic NiAl nanoparticles actually
initially, i just wanna fabricate the nanoparticles
for coating application of course
i have to fabricate that crazy alloy coz we cant get it from any supplier
of course they have it..
but not as small as 10 nm in diameter
maybe for more than 100nm, we can purchase here in Japan
why do I need 10nm particles?
coz I need to develop a layer of 1 micrometer co-deposition

Yes..this is Japanese style
Never say never (cam justin bibir lak)
if they dont have it, we will make it
I do remember one of my friend in Malaysia could not do anything for 3 semesters
coz the materials was not available in Malaysia
in fact, over the world
crazy right?

hah..until now, i cant get any NiAl nanoparticles
most of my samples have about 1% Al content
useless!
I have tried various Ni precursors
from organometallic precursors to metallic precursors

at first, I thought organometallic precursors were cool
cool because they have crazy organic nomenclatures like cyclopentadianyl, acethylacetone..bla..bla..
I used to hate those chemistry things
but now I can't escape anymore
I have to play with them..and LOVE them!

Right now, I feel like talking about my work
I play with the wet chemical synthesis in non-aqueous solvent like THF
non-aqueous environment is needed to avoid any oxygen/humid contamination
and of course the organometallic precursors like NiCp2 and NiAcac2 are soluble in THF
the Ni 2+ and Al3+ have been reduced perfectly
using a very strong chemical reducer - sodium naphthalide
and the weak bonding of organic ligands like Acac and Cp are credits to this methods

seems like different organic ligands contribute to the passivity of Ni surface
for example Acac have phi bonding with Ni2+
WTF is phi bonding?
Damn! I have no idea at all
waaa....I have to study more and more in solid chemistry
sensei used to said that phi bonding is weaker than delta bonding
Cp ligands has delta bonding with Ni2+
really? how am I suppose to know which organic guy has delta
and which one has phi bonding?
questions....huh...malas nak carik jawapan!

My hypothesis is, organic ligand is too sticky when they sit together with Ni
why? simple!
using the same methods and same condition
applied to other metal like Platinum
you will definitely got intermetallic phase
the Pt surface clearly not passivated by its organic ligands
experimentally? -yes! that is the answer..
theoretically? - no! I have no idea
again, malas nak carik jawapan!

By chance, I found an amazing paper
just published this year
a new Ni precursors were found
and as a coincident, the guy who found that idea is my sensei's friend
they used to work together back then in US, at Cornell U
my sensei said that this guy spent 2 year playing with Ni nanoparticles
Ya Tuhan...I felt like I have just started
and I dont have another 2 years

WTH is that new Ni precursor?

this new guy will definitely can solved my sticky organic ligands problems
and I am gonna love him soon

But unfortunately...
after 3rd trial, still no promising results
1st attempt...definitely poor handling
2nd...11-mar Japan mega-quake;
the furnace were break down and I left it just like that over months
3rd...huh..I dont wanna talk about it actually
terrible silly mistakes
double mistake-1st; i forgot to turn the furnace off
2nd- the sample tube was not perfectly sealed
my mistake though I have prepared it like menatang minyak yang penuh
cis..cis...dan cis!

It wasn't completely my fault actually
the furnace itself does not provide a good heating condition
it's like a tube furnace with open ends
sensei suggested that i should use vacuum furnace instead

well well well
then I have to design a new sample tube
extra work again
in a very fast moving mode
in two weeks, I have tried many experiments
so so tired

i think I have worked so hard
why?
because people always said;
work smart, not work hard
well...they left me no choice
coz I think I am not smart
so I have to work hard
the thing is, I work too hard
and I just wasting my time.....

My PhD progress

Here I am, in my lab. Struggling with the lab work after almost 2 months 'goro goro' in Malaysia (Japan mega-quake reason actually). Looking through my progress so far...wa...horror..horror...seems like my PhD is almost impossible!

I can't cover all the work scopes...and the scopes already...how can I say..shifted? yeah, shifted maybe. Stuck in the middle of somewhere..ewah...cam lirik lagu pulak...

Anyway..here is my content of my thesis. I prepared it as early as 1st or 2nd semester and already modified several times. Never too early to prepare your table of content. It's like your frame work actually.


Summary:
chapter 5: is included by accident- makes me confused about my thesis title
chapter 7: will be removed due to limited time- current thesis title is not related anymore..

so how?
